What is a Variation Order?

A variation order (also called a change order in the US and Canada) is a formal written instruction that modifies the original scope of work in a construction contract. When a client requests additional work, changes to materials, or modifications to the original plans, a variation order documents those changes — including the additional cost and any impact on the project timeline.

For builders and contractors, variation orders are essential. Without a signed variation order, any extra work you complete becomes extremely difficult to invoice — and even harder to enforce if a client disputes the charge.
